Colorado Whitewater!
June 15-20, 2009
What draws you into the forbidding Rocky Mountains?
Is it the glow of the snow covered peaks at dawn? How about the sweet smell right after a summer rain shower? Or the cool mountain air at dusk?
Would you believe that you can kayak down a Rocky Mountain stream? This summer you can with the instruction, guidance and support of your friends at the Olympic Outdoor Center. We will be taking the third week of June to enjoy all of the river fun that we can pack into the days, and savor the cool calm of summer evenings in the mountains. This year our basecamp will be near Salida, CO. Salida is at the heart of the state, and will allow us easy access to 90 miles of whitewater on the Arkansas River between Leadville, and Pueblo. Additionally, this early date for the trip will enable you to meet paddlers from all across the country at the FIBArk Festival in Salida.
The rivers that we have run in the past include the Cache de la Poudre, Fish Creek, and the Yampa in the northern part of the state, Clear Creek, the Colorado, the Arkansas, and the Platte in the Central part of the state, and the Animas, and the Rio Grande in the southern part of the state. Of course the itinerary for this trip will depend on the skills and progress of the group, and the water levels that we find.
