Course Skill Levels!

Level 0  

  1.   Have never been in a whitewater canoe or kayak OR

  2. Have paddled in a whitewater kayak/canoe less than five times OR

  3. Are switching from another craft to a whitewater kayak/canoe

Level 1

  1.  Paddle with effective strokes

  2. Have paddled a whitewater kayak/canoe 5-10 times on whitewater in the last year.

  3. Understand and execute basic ferries, peel-outs and eddy turns

  4. Demonstrate river stewardship

  5.  Self-rescue
    Minimum qualifications for kayaks:

  6.  Perform wet exits with ease

  7. Successfully performed a flatwater roll in the last year

  8. Attempted rolls in current in last year

Level 2

  1.   Paddle Class II rivers consistently and confidently

  2. Completed whitewater river trips at least five times in a kayak/canoe in the last year.

  3. Be able to choose own route down rapids/rivers

  4. Perform crisp ferries, peel-outs and eddy turns in Class II whitewater

  5. Have the desire to improve techniques by using better body mechanics

  6. Are able to maintain upright posture
    Minimum qualifications for kayaks:

  7. Roll consistently on Class II whitewater
    Minimum qualifications for canoes:

  8. Self-rescue regularly; including gear

  9.  Assist other with rescue

  10.  Use off-side strokes

Level 3

  1.  Paddle Class III whitewater consistently and confidently

  2. Have done an adventure trip with Class IV rapids

  3. Lead others down rapids/rivers on Class III water

  4. Catch one-boat eddies on Class III water

  5. Attempt challenging moves

  6. Are able to maintain upright posture

  7. Minimum qualifications for kayaks:

  8. Roll reliably on Class III whitewater

  9. Attempt hands and off-side rolls
    Minimum qualifications for canoe:

  10. Perform effective high and low braces

  11. Self-rescue with gear

  12. Assist others with rescues

  13. Perform off-side strokes proficiently

Level 4

  1.   Paddle and play in class III+ rivers

  2.  Have done multiple adventure trips

  3.  Eddy hop through rapids

  4.  Boat scout class III+

  5.  Surf with relaxed confidence in class III+

  6.  Boat control primarily based on body mechanics (not on the paddle)

  7.  Consistent in making your line

  8.  Comfortable in whitewater even without a clear line of sight

  9.  Proactive about group safety

  10.  Minimum qualifications:

  11.   Assist others with rescues

  12.   Clearly and completely visualize rapids

Level 5

  1.  Positive and proficient in class IV rivers

  2. Have done multiple adventure trips

  3. Consistently make challenging lines

  4. Execute plan B’s on demand

  5. Comfortable boat control while vertical

  6. Link moves confidently

  7. Demonstrate conscientious group awareness

  8.     Minimum qualifications for kayaks:

  9. Able to respond positively to adversity

Level 6

  1.  Relaxed and powerful in extreme conditions

  2. Have done multiple adventure trips

  3. Have protective gear

  4. Execute quick swiftwater rescues

  5. Use whole body to maneuver boat

  6. Paddle regularly practicing the fundamentals of paddling

  7. Minimum qualifications:

  8. Never give up!
